Each tutor comes with his or her own strengths and weaknesses, but we’d like to think there are a few tenets that keep all of our online educators grouped under one umbrella category.
The category is labeled awesome.
So with that said, SeeMyTutor has a few ideas as to what constitutes a truly remarkable tutor.
1. Never rush.
Sessions need not be overly long, but they should never feel as if the clock is ticking.
2. Know your limits.
When good tutors need a break—they take one. And good tutors never bite off more than they can chew.
3. Make the classroom as fun as possible.
When kids have fun, they learn. That’s the bottom line.
4. Establish the stakes.
A student’s future is what is at stake. Tutors help open the path to success in life.
5. Learn the language of constructive criticism.
There’s a big difference between helping out and hurting feelings. Good tutors understand the distinction.
6. Understand setbacks.
Not all students have the same strengths and weaknesses. Effective tutors leverage strengths and put their students at a greater advantage.
7. Refuse to “fail.”
Failure. There’s no such thing. There are only steps toward success.
8. Know when you can’t help.
Not all tutors have the same strengths.
9. Get better with each session.
Each session gives a good tutor more room for improvement.
10. Check on progress.
The tutor/student relationship doesn’t end when the sessions are over. Great tutors want to survey the results they’ve helped create.
